The M10 notification: Proof of valid health insurance
The M10 Notification: What it is and why it's important for your studies in Germany
If you want to study in Germany – whether you're from Germany or abroad – you must prove that you have valid health insurance. This is a mandatory requirement for enrollment at a German university. The M10 notification (in German: Meldung M10) is a digital message sent directly from a German statutory health insurance provider to your university.
The M10 notification is a crucial part of the enrollment process at German universities. It ensures that you meet the legal requirement for health insurance in Germany.
How do you get the M10 notification?
- Choose a German statutory health insurance provider. If you choose a large health insurance provider that operates nationwide, you can expect online application forms and services in English. You should take care of this as early as possible, ideally right after you receive your admission letter. Without the M10 notification, your enrollment may be delayed or rejected.
- Register with a health insurance provider. You should indicate which university you will be studying at in your application. You can join Germany's largest health insurance provider, Techniker Krankenkasse, online and receive immediate provisional confirmation.
- The statutory health insurance sends the M10 notification directly to the university. This usually happens immediately after you register, even if you have not yet arrived in Germany. You don't need to send anything yourself – it's handled digitally.

What if you have private or international insurance?
If you come from another EU country, you can keep your statutory health insurance of your home country. You do not need to take out insurance in Germany. However, a German health statutory insurance must check your health insurance. They will then send the M10 form to the German university. Here you can apply for the M10 notification online.
Even if you have private health insurance, you still need to contact a statutory health insurer. They will review your insurance and, if it qualifies, grant you an exemption from statutory insurance. They will then send an M10 notification to your university.
Important: Private health insurance from countries outside the EU is generally not recognized, even if it offers coverage in Germany. If you are not from an EU country, you should take out statutory health insurance.
